Windy Week Key West Fishing Tough But Forecast Looks Great!

Windy week gets calm and shows our anglers great days on the water.

Tarpon release

Tarpon being released by Capt. John (Merlin) at Dream Catcher Charters of Key West.

August 8th 2017 — Windy week prevailed here in Key West making things a little tough on the fishing front. Florida commercial Spiny Lobster season opened up on August 6th and there were many people out there trying their hand at catching the little “bugs” in less than stellar conditions with winds pushing the 20 mph mark pretty steady and a constant flow of rain showers and some thunderstorms.

Inshore the fishing was pretty good. The sight fishermen flats fishing had opportunities at bonefish and permit pretty much in all the tides. The tarpon are still around but not in the larger numbers were were seeing back in June. Our anglers have been making a good day of it with lots of shots tarpon fishing. For the rod bender on the flats and backcountry fishing we have had some great sight fishing for barracudas and jacks along the edges of the flats. Since the winds were up this has definitely been the place to be for a good day of fishing.

The deep sea fishing report boasts some over 10 lb dolphin caught on board one of our Key West deep sea fishing boats out in the bumpy stuff. I am sure those anglers earned their catch in the higher than normal seas we have been experiencing.

Fishing On the reef the report is good with large yellowtail snappers and some mutton  snappers mixed in. Red grouper are still around and in season here in the Atlantic and well worth the shot to catch one. On our reef trips this last week even in the winds we were able to compound on some good snapper and deeper species such as scamp grouper, yellow edge and hinds.

The forecast looks good for the following weekend and into next week with winds dropping down to  a manageable and more summer like 10 mph. So far the tropics are leaving us alone and we are enjoying a very good fishing season with loads of folks vacationing to Key West to experience the summer rates. \

Tips For Fishing Next Week

Food fishing go to the reef on board our 36 ft Yellowfin center console for grouper and snapper. Our half day is all you need but 6 hours is perfect to catch some fish for dinner and have a lot of fun. There are plenty of fish out there on the reef and the winds will come down by Friday and make it nice..

For the flats fishermen – don’t hesitate to book a technical flats fishing charter. This is the time of the year for great flats fishing. Bonefish, tarpon and permit are all around the flats. This is my favorite time to get in the shallows and make it happen. With he lighter winds this weekend you are looking at some great fishing.

Fishing and Snorkeling in the backcountry. A great way to enjoy a summer day here in Key West. Our backcountry and reef fishing charters both include snorkeling gear for no additional cost. Your call, make the day your way. Its beautiful on top and under the waters of Key West.
