Permit Fishing The Flats of Key West

August 25th 2018 – Summer conditions prevail here in Key West making this years Key West flats fishing Season just awesome. Just enough breeze to keep it from being hellishly hot and plenty of fish to keep even the itchiest flats fisherman occupied with opportunities of fish to cast to.

Permit fish

Capt. Bryson of Dream Catcher Charters got his client on this monster Flats fishing Key West for permit a few days ago

Permit are our favorite fish to go fishing in Key West for. Without a doubt one of the more skid-ish fish to fish for on the flats which makes them that much more sport. Here lately we have been seeing some good numbers of extremely large permit cruising the flats. In the calmer waters it makes for a tough shot fly fishing but our live bait spin fishermen have been compounding on big permit this week.

Spin Fishing For Permit
A light rod loaded with 10-15 lb test line I prefer braided lines like Samurai from Daiwa and a really good grade of 12-15lb fluorocarbon as a leader. I like to use a 1/0 or 2/0 hook (Owner SSW Hooks are my favorite).

Fly Fishing For Permit
Bring a ton of patience. I prefer a 9 wt fly rod for tailing permit as a light presentation with a light fly is needed. However when the water is thick so are the permit and I step up to a 10 wt fly rod to punch a heavier crab pattern through the sky. Also a great size choice in fly rods for our smaller tarpon this time of the year.

Along with the permit are some really great opportunities at bonefishing and tarpon fishing on the flats and into the trees as well. Our water temps are perfect for this time of the year for flats fishing. I would have to say that its been the perfect mix of thunderstorms to keep our temps managed.

I know our neighbors to the North on the West Coast of Florida are dealing with some red tide.. I assure you we have seen – nor do we expect to see any Red Tide  here in the Florida Keys and Key West.

This is the time of the year to go flats fishing here in Key West. The fishing will be great all the way through October. Give us a call To see what we have available for you in our schedule.

I love my Orvis Fly Rods for fly fishing the flats Key West. I provide for my clients and personally use the Orvis Helios 3 D. In our arsenal for teaching we have the Orvis Clearwater as well and that is a great affordable alternative. For spinning reels and rods I use specifically Daiwa products such as the new Exist, Saltiga and the Saltist.

Here are some links below to get you started in fishing the flats either fly fishing or spin fishing.
