Backcountry Fishing Report

Backcountry Fishing report Key West

February 23rd 2020 – Its a windy day here in Key West with the last remnants of a cold front that marched through here on Friday where the air temps dropped to the low 60s that brought our water temps down to a more normal 71 degrees. Looks like fall – like weather will prevail till Thursday.

Guided by Capt. John one of our veteran fishing guides here at Dream Catcher Charters this angler put another check on his bucket list..

Our backcountry fishing charters have been producing some decent fishing. We have had many options with our winter cast of characters such as trout, jacks, snappers, blue fish and lady fish to keep the rods bent.

The things I look forward to are the South Easterly winds this time of the year that usher in a summer like feel to the air and put our flats fishing species on the feed and in the shallows. Species such as permit and surprisingly this year bonefish. February is usually a good time for permit but typically too cold for bonefish, not this year we have had both. If anglers have the patience to hunt, we can get a shot at them both when the conditions are right. Best thing to do is talk it over with your fishing guide the day of your trip to see what he will be able to do for you.

As the weather patterns seem to reamain the same for us here in Key West. A chill about every 1.5 weeks I don’t see a big difference in our backcountry fishing, I think it will remain good. Winds will be up quite a bit so this will also be a very popular fishing charter for us as well. Our schedule is really filling up with bookings on the windy days with folks that want to retreat from the waves of deep sea fishing and reef fishing.

This time of the year booking on the weather is tough. We have so many people that will be in town looking to go fishing. Watch your extended forecasts and play off of that. We use apps like Wind Finder and Windy to predict our weather up to 10 days out.

Booking a trip with us is easy. We have the nicest well kept boats in Key West for backcountry and flats fishing here at Dream Catcher Charters. Running them, we have a seasoned group of fishing guides here to show you stellar customer service and outstanding professionalism.
