Key West Deep Sea Fishing Heats Up!

May 31st 2021 – Now that the weather has gotten more seasonal (meaning hot and lower winds) things are heating up offshore here in Key West with some very interesting results from the last week in deep sea fishing.

Deep Sea Fishing Report

Since the blow stopped last week the Key West deep sea fishing fleet has been making up for lost time with some substantial days on the blue water. Full moons are typically tough for a morning mahi bite but not last week. Everyone in the fleet did very well on filing the coolers with some mahi mahi in the 5-10lb range with some larger fish reported up to over 20lbs. Now, these fish did not come super easy for most of the boats. With the Gulf Stream way offshore (30 miles from the reef) some of the boats made runs out to the 2500 ft range to get into the more consistent bites. This is a 6 hour or full day trip for the sport fish boats but our center consoles can make it on problem on a 4 hour deep sea fishing charter.

On my 47ft Viking the INXS we did very well on mahi. We had some 6 hour trips last week that put some nice fish in the box making our customers very happy. Our Yellowfin 36 the Too Intense deep sea fishing with Capt. Rob not only got into some nice dolphin as well but also had a shot at a blue marlin that ate a bait and spit the hook. Capt. Craig fishing on board the Key West deep sea fishing charter Linda D boated and released a blue marlin about 250 lbs. Not to be outdone the Reef Runner of the Conch fleet also released two blue marlin last week on operate trips making this May full moon pretty spectacular for the Key West deep sea fishing fleet.

Deep Sea Fishing Forecast

Its gonna get hot. I mean temperature. We have been so blessed with 80 degree weather it now will be time to sweat as our weather will go seasonal. No one can say how far the Gulf Stream will be in the coming weeks but its my guess that we will see it snake its way in a little closer bringing us the monster mahi we have grown accustom to this time of the year. The pros really watch the moon phases, Marlin on a full moon and wahoo on a full and new moon. Dolphin will bite all in between.

Deep Sea Fishing Charters

Key West has been PACKED. Room rates are high and there are people everywhere this May but all that is coming to a lull next week as things start to get back to normal with COVID and folks are able to travel anywhere mostly instead of just the Florida Keys. In that I suspect Key West accommodation rates will come back to normal (whatever that was). I just checked and rooms at a decent place for mid June are going for 280 – 600 a night.. A far cry from the 1000 – 1300 a night we have been seeing.

Book in advance. There is still some limited availability for deep sea fishing charters next week and opening up a bit later in the month. Playing the weather this time of the year might lose your shot a good boat to book. Call Island Genn at my office. She handles the schedule of about 10 deep sea fishing charters here in Key West that can get you out. It will save you a lot of time and headache..
