Key West Deep Sea Fishing Has Sailfish

Sailfish Release Sailfish Release

April 10th 2021 – We are finally in spring time here in Key West which can mean brisk Easterly winds with sailfish marching down the reef offering deep sea fishing charters a shot at one of our most prized sport fish.

Deep Sea Fishing Report

The deep sea fishing has been a bit slow these last few weeks for us here in Key West with the captains being super creative to put fish in the box for their people. That and the winds last week that kept us at the dock. Since then things have certainly heated up with the sailfish bite coming alive. Yesterday there were several reports of sailfish being caught on both live bait on kite and trolling. That bite came with a later in the day blackfin tuna bite these last few days coming up on the new moon phase.

Lots of folks have been asking about the dolphin (mahi mahi) bite and there have been some mahi caught in the 200 – 500 ft range. Capt. Steve Sterns did well at 450 yesterday with 3 or 4 just legal mahi for the box and several throw backs. My bite yesterday was very slow with only small dolphin so then I started trolling the reef for cero mackerels and yellowtail snappers on board the INXS my 47 ft Viking. My folks really wanted meat, so I did what I could and it worked out with some good food fish in the box.

So, I wouldn’t not say the mahi report is “On Fire” but that can break any day. We will let you know here.

Deep Sea Fishing Forecast

The new moon is tomorrow (Sunday) and that may offer a good shot at a wahoo and things should stay steady with sailfish and probably improving. The winds are 10 – 15 through Tuesday the 13th then dropping out to summer like conditions into the later part of next week. The Gulf stream is reported to be 5 miles off the reef making it an easy run for HOPEFULLY larger dolphin coming down the pipe. – Looking forward to that..

Could be a super exciting week of deep sea fishing next week!
