Key West Backcountry Fishing Is Fire!

January 25 2023 – The weather has been a typical winter here in Key West. Our Key West backcountry fishing is Fire. A cold front about every four days. Winds from the SE followed by winds from the SW and then the W then a howl from the NW. It’s a cycle. A much needed cycle that keeps our fishing fresh and fun.

Trout fishing has been very good in Key West

Backcountry Fishing Report

The shallows are the first to notice not only the cooling trends but also the warming trends. The captains here at Dream Catcher charters are so keyed in on it, it’s ridiculous. With the cooler water temps in the high 60s our trout bite goes from fun to amazing. Along side of them the bluefish, spanish mackerel jacks, pompano and snappers all put on the feed bag and work the bait in the shallows. Casting and catching has been the name of the game for the folks that have been out with us in the backcountry these last few weeks. Using mostly artificial lures for great success.

backcountry tarpon
January has been good for tarpon.

The bonus has been the late (or early) season tarpon that are still around and the captains here at Dream Catcher Charters have been getting into on a pretty steady occasion. It has been really fun and somewhat unpredictable which makes it even better. These tarpon have been quite large.

On the flats during the warmer trends we have been seeing permit and a few bonefish. I would not hesitate to get on the bow of a boat for some excellent flats fishing here in Key West when the winds are from the East or South East.

Backcountry Fishing Forecast

I do not have a hard time imagining the weather staying steady with the season right on into February fishing. Especially seeing the next from that will hit us this weekend. This will chill our air temps to about mid 60s and water temps will follow. We have had lots of clients during these cold fronts come out with us to avoid the high seas of Key West deep sea fishing. Even with the strong North winds we can get into some great action on the protected flats and show folks a great day of Key West fishing.
