Deep Sea Fishing

November 23rd 2024 – Deep sea fishing in Key West will be getting very good now that our weather is sorted out and the temps get cooler. We have been really looking forward to this time of the year and it seems mother nature will be kind enough to let us get out without the pounding. I always recommend that folks come to enjoy a Key West Thanksgiving. Its a great time to go fishing.

Fishing Report

Key West Deep sea fishing has been hit or miss through the month of November. Mostly with the weather making a mess of things but the Key West deep sea fishing fleet has been getting out. With the cooler temps the bait fish are showing up on the reef edge. This last full moon really did not show up with a killer wahoo bite as we suspected it would. A few fish were caught but it was far from stellar. Chasing the ballyhoo on the reef we are seeing smaller sailfish getting up in the skinny water grabbing a snack. Water quality for the reef was just good enough to turn the bite on for them, if you could get a bait in their face. A nice by-catch has been the yellowtail snappers that have been large enough and bold enough to eat a whole rigged bait. Other by Catches include the mutton snappers, cero mackerel and kingfish.

This tasty yellowtail ate an entire ballyhoo trolled through the shallow reefs. See the pro tip below about how we caught many others.

Out a little deeper just past the edge of the reef in 100 plus feet or so we have been getting a good bit of action from the bonito with the occasional hit from blackfin tunas out to 300 ft. A few but not so many to write about mahi have been landed on some trips. This time of the year we really expect the blackfin tunas to keep things super exciting.

Key West Has Great Thanksgiving Day Dinner Options

Fishing Forecast

Thanksgiving is this week and the weather looks fantastic for the folks who have booked us for deep sea fishing. All through the holiday week Northerly winds will prevail keeping our reef stacked with ballyhoo. This will improve everything, it’s like an aquatic Thanksgiving feast! The blackfin tuna bite will improve and we are expecting a nice winter full moon on the 15th of December for the wahoo bite to excel on. As we move into December remember that is the last month of grouper season so take a look at our Key West reef fishing trips to target specifically grouper and snapper on the reef before the fishing season for them closes on January 1. Check out the Key West yellowtail fishing report.

DIY Pro Tip

Don’t discount the shallows. While working the deep keep an eye on the reef for frigates and bait showers. The predators will chase the ballyhoo making them shower up through the air. This can be a golden opportunity for a sailfish or any other species grabbing a snack.

DO NOT! – rush these baits. that will only put the fish down for everyone. Slide in slow and read the bait patterns. If someone is already on them, let them have it. Do not ruin it for everyone. Have a bait down on a down rigger if you can. A well rigged ballyhoo long or a live bait will not last long in there. You will be amazed what some patience and well place bait will catch.
