Key West Fishing Report April

Springtime fishing

Key West fishing report has anglers choosing their pleasure here in Key West April fishing. Be it deep sea fishing for blackfin tunas, sail fish or Mahi or reef fishing for yellowtail and mutton snappers or on the flats for bonefish and tarpon Key West has been loaded pretty good with some great fishing opportunities.

Key West Fishing Report April
Blackfin tunas have been consistent deep sea fishing off Key West.

Without a doubt April is a great month for fishing Key West. In the top three for sure. As the winds of March lay off and the weather patterns turn to summer like, Key West turns tropical and the fish start pouring in.

Deep sea fishing has been “Ok” with the Gulf Stream super close bringing a ripping current in just past the reef there are a few weed lines on that edge. In the blue water however scattered weed makes it tough to do some effective trolling. There are some mahi in the scattered weed but it’s pick and pull. The interesting note is the green water before the color change and the current is holding sailfish and blackfins mixed with the odd mahi and bonito. The full moon last few days produced very few wahoo for the Key West deep sea fishing fleet. The Key West sailfish challenge met some angry weather conditions and the top boat on three days of fishing had 8 sailfish caught.

The afternoon and late day bite has been best for tunas and mahi this week following the full moon.

bonefishing
One of my anglers with a nice Key West Bonefish last week. Flats fishing with me on board my Yellowfin CE.

Inshore fishing on the flats and backcountry has been good. Our anglers are enjoying an overwhelming amount of bonefish that we are seeing out of Key West with some nice catches on bait, artificial and fly fishing. It’s the start of our Key West tarpon fishing and things are going well. We are seeing and jumping a good number of tarpon. Last weeks cold front slowed things a bit over all but the weather is straight now and the tarpon are back. Sight fishing for barracudas has been a nice by product fishing the flats as well as sneaking out to the shallow reefs for some mangrove, yellowtail and mutton snappers.

Mutton Snapper
Young man with a tasty Spring time mutton snapper caught on our backcountry trip here at Dream Catcher Charters.

Yellowtail snapper fishing on the reef has been exceptional just like it always is in April and will continue to be right through June. Add that to the mutton snappers and our anglers are eating well on our Key West reef fishing trips. Here at Dream Catcher Charters we use two different types of boats for reef fishing. One is our 36 Ft Yellowfin center console that can cruise fast and Get out there from Key West to the Dry Tortugas. The other is our 28 Ft Center console that is amazing for kids and fun fishing from Key West to the Marquesas Keys keeping it easy on the budget and fun with no big waves.
