Key West Fishing Report
Key West fishing report for August 2025 – It’s been a windy summer so far. Some days with SE wind pushing 20 mph. The flat calm days we are accustomed to are a few and far between. This is probably why our inshore waters have had lower water temps than typical for a hot summer. Keeping the water stirred up is a key feature to cooler water temps which by the way, really helps with the fishing. These last few days the air temp has cooled off a little bit, but the humidity still stays strong. Giving Key West that balmy tropical feel that we are notorious for.
Key West Fishing Report
Across the board, the fishing has been very good out of Key West these past few weeks. Inshore on the backcountry and flats fishing fronts, we have been seeing a good bit of Tarpon still with larger fish in the channels and the babies stacking up around the mangroves. Bonefish are all over the flats with some of the best bone fishing Key West has seen in ages. Of course we have permit too ready to devour a crab. In the backcountry the snapper fishing’s been pretty good so has barracuda fishing, tarpon fishing and on the nicer days we get out to the shallower reefs to enjoy different species.

On the reef, the mangrove snappers, yellowtail snappers, and mutton snappers are done spawning however, the fishing has been outstanding on the reef for all of those species from 35 to 120 feet of water it’s all been good. The deeper reefs after 120 feet out to about 240 feet this time of year has been holding some pretty outstanding mutton snapper, yellow eye snapper and grouper as these fish have been seeking the cooler water temps like they do every summer. August September and October are really great times to get out and do some reef fishing or head out to the Dry Tortugas because the weather makes for a nice boat ride.

Deep sea fishing in the Blue Water has been pretty darn good. The mahi have been larger than usual for the summer just not as many fish on the average. Fish up to 10 and 12 pounds have been caught on the daily with average is being 22 to 26 inches. Longer runs are needed this time of year to get the deeper water where the mahi are moving through. These last few weeks we’ve been fishing between 1200 and 1800 feet of water off of Key West.. this seems to be where the weed lines start to really thicken up and get straight, offering the mahi the shelter they are looking for. The occasional large Atlantic Sailfish has also been caught and on the full moon, the wahoo possibility have been very strong.
Fishing Forecast
looking at the long range forecast and the computer models. It seems that the Florida Keys will be left alone for the next few weeks at least from any hard-core tropical storm activity fingers crossed. With a constant south east breezes this will keep the Fishing very consistent. The only thing you’ll have to watch out for is the occasional pop up thunderstorm. This will keep the water stirred up just enough to prevent our water temperatures in the backcountry from going too high and I bet you it will keep the tarpon around for an extended period all the way through September into October possibly. Don’t forget our best flats Fishing is done in August September and October. October, being our Banner month for large bonefish.

Offshore a reef and deep sea fishing should remain the same. The deep sea bite for at least the next few weeks should produce some nice mahi if the runs can be made. I really don’t expect any changes there. A great time to book a key West deep sea fishing boat and go out and live the dream. I always recommend that people book at least six or eight hours to allow the captains and crews of the sport fishing boats fishing the blue waters get out to the fish.
With the consistent weather patterns and nothing scary on the horizon. The reef Fishing should remain the same as well. We always look forward to running out towards the Dry Tortugas this time of year because of the smoother waters and productive Fishing. Also a great trip to go on in the summer here out of Key West.

Visiting Key West in August, it can be very warm however the room rates are super low and the island is not crowded a truly special time to visit our island city here in the tropics. In the evening, the island cools off and it’s a great time to visit one of our amazing restaurants and see the nightlife that is Key West. Many businesses this time of year run specials especially this year as tourism has been very slow for Key West in 2025, so don’t forget to ask typically you will not get a discount on a fishing charter however, other things on the island may have specials.
