Wow, It’s howling outside.

As I sit here and ponder exactly what I could write to make the fishing coming up this week sound exciting and entertaining I have to look at other places in the United States that have incredibly more un bearable conditions than ours.

Lakeland, FL.  Tomorrow they will have a low if 21 degrees… My folks live there.
Blowing Rock, NC. Right now it’s 16 degrees. We love to visit there.

All said. It’s 63 Degrees here with a North West Wind of about 35 mph. Lows are expected to go down to 44 degrees on Tuesday with a moderate warming trend through the week. Does not seem so bad after checking the weather of those other locations.

Went fishing yesterday on the backcountry waters for my little Christmas gift to myself.  Couple of the boys here at Dream Catchers went with me. We got into some nice sized permit, saw many sharks of three species, caught jacks, muttons, lanes, blue runners, mackerel and some other tid bits for some light tackle fun on a Christmas day. Water was crystal clear and very nice with water temps hovering in the mid to high 60’s. It was a nice day to say the least.

This front will change things here in Key West, but just for a day or two. we have trips scheduled for today (cancelled) tomorrow (we’ll see) and through the week both offshore, inshore, backcountry, wrecks and reef.

I expect that the backcountry will start to see some more cold water species such as pompano, redfish, trout, bluefish and more as this cooler water starts to become cold for us. Permit should stick around on the flats after about wednesday but till then… its anyone guess.

On the wrecks and reefs we have enjoyed an incredible bottom fishing bite. Amazing catches of grouper and snapper all up and down the keys. I don’t expect that to stop, in fact it may improve in the shallows as bait becomes more prolific. The reef will show itself as a great shot for sailfish, kingfish and tuna through the week. Don’t be afraid to book a bottom fishing trip out of Key West as the North winds will keep the seas light on the south line of the island chain making for some great grouper fishing.
