July 13th 2014 – The tarpon fishing migration is officially all but over here in Key West for the 2014 season. But don’t fret.. We still have tarpon laying around and ready to eat.. We know where they are..

Many fishing guides I have spoken with thought that this year was a good year for numbers of fish. The tarpon were eating really well to on fly and artificial. The problem this year was the winds. May was the windiest that many of us can remember for fishing the Migrational fish this year. I myself found the tarpon fishing this year fishing to be stellar and were able to get after them any time I wanted because of the use of my 24 ft Yellowfin Bay boats. Our bay boats don’t care about a little wind. We have state of the art trolling motors made by MotorGuide to propel us toward these fish and get our anglers the shots that they are paying us for. Its a matter of choice. We have flats boats and we have bay boats. We use what makes sense and get after the tarpon.

The 4th of July is behind us. In tarpon fishing things are starting to get REALLY good in my opinion. The tarpon are still here. Lately I am seeing numerous tarpon up to and over 100lbs in some of the places that I can remember held fish back 10 and 15 years ago. The best part is, my anglers have them all to themselves. Boat traffic is down due to the slower summer months and the backcountry is empty as all the part time scabs are gone back to Montana and the local guides seem to be slowing up as well. This makes for story book conditions for tarpon fishing in my opinion and some great memories.

July will continue to hold fish for me and the crew here at Dream Catcher Charters. We are into the fish pretty strong and the trend should stay that way through August and September. Early morning tarpon fishing then off to the flats for the rest of the big three – Permit and bonefish. See my flats fishing reports for more on that.

Photo Note – I shot this with a Nikon D4 last week. The lens used was a Nikkor 105mm 2.8. I used this lens just as an experiment to see if it was as tack sharp out of the studio as it was in. I was right. There was little light to play with and the shot came out brilliant. There should be a high res shot here.

To book your summer tarpon fishing trip, its not too late. We are busy but we still have room to get you out there. Just Call..
