April 18th 2019 – As another cold front approaches we also have the full moon on Friday. Will this be the last front of the year? who knows? The weather is always a game of craps this time of the year and it can have its effect on the fishing.. Here at Dream Catcher Charters we have been super busy fishing inshore and offshore fishing charters. Its that time of the year.

Fishing Report

Inshore things are “ok”. The tarpon fishing season is in full swing but the migration has not begun yet. We are seeing lots of fish in various locations but the bite has been tough. Tarpon Fishing Report. The rod bending has been stellar with great catches of snappers and trout for lunch and the lady fish, jacks and occasional barracudas purely for the excitement of fishing.

Flats fishing the permit are getting scarce as they are headed to the reef for the yearly spawn but we are seeing a good number of bonefish to keep our anglers happy with shots at one of the big three.

Reef fishing has been very good. Of course we are all anticipating the opening of Grouper season here in the South Atlantic on May 1 the snapper fishing has been very good. The full moon of April, May and June can hold large groups of spawning snappers. The yellowtails have been pretty good size and the muttons have been numerous. The permit have gone to the reef to spawn, so that opens an opportunity to catch permit on the reef.

Deep Sea fishing is the highlight for this fishing report. Sailfish, tuna and dolphin are being caught daily when the boats are pushing out in spite of the winds. Some boats have done double digit numbers on sailfish.

Fishing Forecast

Full moon tomorrow night will possibly bring the wahoo out to play in through this cold front in the deep sea fishing. Typically a full moon can slow the dolphin (mahi mahi) bite. I expect the sail-fishing, dolphin and tuna to get back on track in the North Easterly and Easterly winds that will follow starting on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. The weather next week looks great for some incredible deep sea fishing.

The full moon will affect the tarpon fishing.. Best bite will be before 9 am and later in the evening till about Tuesday then back to a good bite all day. The migration typically starts in the first week in may. The permit will stay on the reef for a couple weeks but there will still be some shots to be had by the ones that stayed behind for flats fishing. The bone fishing will be getting better as the waters warm. I expect this year to surpass last year for numbers of bonefish caught due to many factors.. We certainly had no shortage of bonefish last year.

The Key West reef fishing bite will remain solid with snappers chewing off the hook. We could use a little more bait on the reef. Remember that May 1 we get our grouper back. That means deep dropping and reef grouper.

The backcountry fishing is always the most popular ways to fish this time of the year. Tarpon and fun rod bending with light sea conditions are very appealing to our sport fishing customers. You can be safe in fishing the backcountry here out of Key West the next week or so, conditions will be amazing.
