We Recommend Backcountry Fishing This Week
Last Week In March Looks Great for Backcountry fishing
March 26th 2017 – Shhhhh. We don’t talk about the weather before we leave the dock but….. Its sure is nice this March. Yea, we have had a few windy days to remind us just how it “can” be in March but all in all its been pretty nice and looks like the last week in March will be perfect weather for some great backcountry fishing here in Key West with our talented captains here at Dream Catcher Charters.
We describe backcountry fishing as fishing in and among the islands of the Key West backcountry. Where the flats and shallows are, the channels in between and the basins that hold all the water that encompasses a huge portion of the Great White Heron National Wild Life Refuge. We use spin fishing gear and fly fishing gear to show our folks a great time catching a huge assortment of fish for both sport and lunch.
This past week things have been pretty good. Windy but good. The tarpon fishing bite was a little week this past week with lots of tarpon laying in the usual spots with limited desire to feed. I am sure that will change in the next Key West tarpon fishing report that I put up. A real bonus this past week was the discovery of some bunched up social permit getting ready for their big days on the reef doing the spawn. This time of the year Permit will get together and to the wild thing out on the reef. Just before the new moon they gather up almost like a big group of traveling partners to head out and we know all the little spots that they do this making it an easy shot to catch a permit for our folks and help them live the dream. A rare opportunity to catch a nice trophy fish in some pretty sloppy conditions.
Shark fishing has been a thing here in our backcountry fishing line up. We have been hooking up on some HUGE bull sharks while they are on the flats looking for some partners. Along side them are the occasional cobia, so far we have not seen the cobia we normally do by now. I expect maybe they are a little late or won’t make it at all due to warmer water temps this year.
Fun stuff in the backcountry has been the really good Key West trout bite along with some awesome jacks, bluefish and the occasional Florida Pompano. There are always some lady fish bunched up in places to entertain the angler that needs to be constantly hooked up. Kids love our “fun fishing” when we are doing the Dream Catcher Drift as it is the best way to ensure no boredom and learning some excellent skills in casting and hooking up as well as fighting skills on super light tackle that we use.
For the next foreseeable future of our backcountry fishing I see the tarpon fishing bite coming on very strong over this coming new moon. This will put us in our tarpon season and our backcountry fishing charters are the best way to go fishing for tarpon. The rest of the fishery will stay solid and get even better (hard to imagine). We will certainly put you in front of the fish here.
Get with us about your desire to go fishing and the days you will be here. Easter is in mid April this year and we know the families will be coming. We will show everyone a great day on the water. Call my office and speak to Gennifer or Lila.
