Reef Fishing For Tasty Treats

reef fishing report Reef fishing for Snapper

August 15 2020 – The weather is summer like this week in Key West. That means hot temperatures with calm winds and clear waters over the reefs. This can make for a great reef fishing both deep and shallow. We have been pretty busy here at Dream Catcher Charters getting people out to the meat.

Fishing Report

red snapper and angler
This angler went fishing with us on our very short Atlantic red snapper season. There are plenty of other snapper we can catch that will taste great.

Mutton snapper and yellowtail snapper have been the best part of the cooler mix these last few days out on the reefs here off of Key West. Last week the winds were up a little with slower tides affecting the current but we still compounded on some nice catches of snappers on our 4 and 6 hour fishing charters on board our boat the “Too Intense” a 36 ft Yellowfin center console powered by triple 400 Mercury Verados.

Reef Fishing Forecast

Looking great! As the new moon comes upon us at the end of the weekend with the darker nights I see the current improving across the reefs with the stronger tidal flows. Add to that the Gulf Stream is in a little closer than usual, Just 4 miles South of the Key West reefs. With the forecast having a lack of winds and it will be anyones game out there to hit the reef and have great days of putting meat in the box and fish sandwiches for everyone.. Im super excited about the prospects..

Fishing The Reefs

Mutton Snapper
A nice dinner guest for this angler fishing the reefs of Key West with us.

I am an artificial lure guy and love to catch my food fish without using bait or chum. However bait and chum are still great ways to catch loads of fish on the reefs. With the clear waters longer lighter leaders, smaller hooks will serve anglers well in keeping the fish from seeing the gear.

Fishing Charters

August is a great month for reef fishing charters. Calmer waters and great fishing draw folks to get out with us. We use our Yellowfin 36 mostly but often times on the nice days like the ones we have coming up, our bay boats make great reef fishing charters and keep the fishing rate down a bit. Its your call. Call Us we will go over all the details and help you save money and still have a blast catching fish on the reef.
