June 11th 2024– Never thought I would say this but we finally got a break from the good weather for us to have a nice rainy day off and get caught up on admin to pay some bills and do fishing reports. The weather has been epic for our deep sea fishing charters here in Key West. Mahi mahi or dolphin are on the menu for the Key West fishing report mixed with some other fun species.

Fishing Report

The deep sea fishing has been pretty darn good out of Key West these past weeks. Dolphin of all sizes have been making their way through our area giving anglers all sorts of opportunities to fill the box with some great eating fish. Mostly caught in federal waters our boat limits are about 20 mahi per boat. Thats a good bit of meat when our keepers have been about 23 – 28 inches on average. Dont get me wrong there are some small pea nuts to weed through but I find when I troll bigger baits the “nuts” leave me alone.

There were some large mahi caught last week in the 20+ lb range. Capt. Rob on board the “Too Intense” at Dream Catcher Charters caught a very nice 30lb cow shown below. Nice sized fish like these are still around. This one was caught June 10 in less than 300 feet of water.

Since the last full moon things have been really good for mahi but also good for other species as well. The wahoo bite over the moon was decent with a few boats reporting two wahoo in a trip and many that caught at least one. Some tunas have been around with a downtown boat landing a blackfin that was almost 30 lbs just past the reef yesterday before the weather showed up. For me though the big excitement was on board my boat the “INXS”. We hooked and landed a very nice marlin South of Key West last week and then stung another marlin just yesterday out in 800 ft only to watch that one greyhound away and run off all the line we had on a small dolphin fishing reel before we could get things set to back down on him. That was a real heart breaker. Another Key West deep sea fishing boat Capt. Nelles landed a very nice Key West marlin a few days ago. It has certainly been very active for marlin this year so far. The best bite for marlin seems to be near the full moon. The next full moon is next week on the 21st of June. I will be out there looking for him (the man in the blue suit) on my charters aboard the “INXS” for sure..

Fishing Forecast

Now that the weather has come in from the South with some tropical moisture and wetness. It is really feeling like summer. The LRF (long range forecast) has things staying pretty drippy on and off through next Wednesday with higher or normal P.O.P.s hopefully less the lightning. The good news is the winds wont be stiff till Tuesday then only for a couple of days. I expect things to be really good throughout the period. Hopefully the current slides in a bit. As I see it now that may not happen. Good news we will still be catching fish.

Pro Tip

Its worth a mention that when you are on a deep sea fishing charter and there is a mate working the deck do what you can to learn from them where you can help if needed or how to stay out of his way.. Properly reeling in a line is a huge help when things like a Marlin hooked up happen. Getting the lines in expeditiously so the boat can back down or maneuver is important to get that fish under control. Properly done this could make or break a lifetime memory opportunity. It never hurts to ask the mate where you can help and remember he has a lot of things going on when All Hell Breaks Lose, do what you can to be value added.
