Key West Tarpon Fishing

tarpon jumping in the air Key West tarpon fishing is ON! Come see what all the fuss is about.

Well the Heat Is ON! these last two days here in Key West someone opened up the furnace and let the heat in. Air Temps in the mid to upper 80s with high 80% humidity. Both great ingredients for the tarpon to show up strong here in Key West.

Tarpon Fishing Report

The tarpon have been coming in and out of the Key West waters these last few weeks. Some days are pretty good and then we had some days that there was little or nothing out there. There really has been no rhyme or reason for it. Tropical weather patterns sure make it feel like tarpon season but I can look back in my logs on days in May that were late winters wearing thick jackets to stay warm and fishing for tarpon. It’s been challenging for some of folks who come here year after year to fish with me and my team here at Dream Catcher Charters expecting a traditionally strong tarpon presence and bite in early May. Looking back this year April was a “so so” or “meh” tarpon month this year and early May was a slight improvement. Saying that, these last two days have been pretty damn good so it looks like the fish are here and ready to play.

Tarpon Fishing Forecast

With the inconsistency in the migrational fish these last few weeks I will go out on a limb and say it will be a late season. Which is good, it means we will have tarpon through June. Looking at the L.R.F. (Long Range Forecast) it seems the tropics are still inactive, good news for us here in Key West for sure but, my logs tell me that the early trop systems usually come with loads of tarpon. Time will tell. Looking forward we have high 80s with high humidity and the winds are all over the place but light after Wednesday of this week. Still not quite a summer pattern and not much rain in the forecast.

Tarpon Fishing Charters

We have been pretty busy with backcountry fishing charters and flats fishing charters. When booking a tarpon fishing charter look at backcountry and flats fishing trips. This is by far the best way to get after them. Flats Fishing Boats will be smaller and Bay Boats are very good stable fishing platforms for tarpon fishing.
