Key West Fishing Technique For Winter.

Key West Fishing

10lb test Jacks are fun

Its like a Christmas dream every year fishing the winter here off of Key West. The weather is a bit chilly but not cold by any northern standards. We stay in the 60’s and occasionally get down to the 50’s. With every cold snap the fishing changes here or there for the better. This week marks the first of what I am sure to be MANY cold fronts that drag their tails across the Eastern tier of the US. We get just the butt ends of them with some cranky winds and chilled temps. Winds today are North By North East at about 20knts. But, It is still very fishable and lots of fun.
Our backcountry fishing charters are the most popular trip in Key West. We promise calm seas, lots of rod bending and fun times with smiles across the board. The winter makes this trip a breeze especially using the Dream Catcher Drift..

The Dream Catcher Drift is a technique we use in certain areas of the backcountry during the cooler months. Our bass fishermen love it as they get to blind cast till their hearts content.

Super light line and light spinning or casting rods are used to cast  lipped plugs, specially colored jigs and soft baits. This maneuver reaps huge rewards fishing the back. Trout, Redfish, Large Jacks, Lady Fish, Blue Runners, Blue Fish, Black Tip Sharks and Pompano on the colder days.

The drift depends on the size of the basin and how the predators are working the baitfish but generally its about 20 minutes long and very productive. We set up on the top of bait schools up wind of them and drift. Casting to the edges of muds and bait schools is the ticket and allowing the baits to get super low (but not in) the grass. Anglers find that after they get the hang of it, they can chose what fish they would like to catch. Upper water column holds jacks, Lady fish, Blue Runners. The mid column holds jacks, pompano and sharks. The bottom column holds the Trout and Pompano.

Its a fun way to fish. Anglers fishing with us on a 4 hour trip can expect to catch upwards of 30 fish and more depending on effort just in this little maneuver. The “drift” can be incorporated with our flats fishing and our “All In Wonder” fishing charters as well where we do it all in one day.

We use Yellowfin 24 bay boats and Action Craft 23 center consoles for this sort of fishing and can carry up to 4 anglers per trip of 4, 6, and 8 hours. We use all Daiwa Tackle and the best fishing line money can buy.
