Key West Backcountry Flats Fishing December 2011

Key West Backcountry / Flats Fishing Report

Permit

Key West Permit Fishing

The wind still blows. Looks like it will keep on through Tuesday of next week in the 20’s but thats not an issue.. This time the winds bring with them a Northerly direction and some cooler air which will equate to cooler water temps changing the game for every stage of fishing here in Key West.

Backcountry and flats.

Don’t expect to have Santa bring you any December bonefish up on the flats in any
solid numbers this year. The hunt will be for permit. Permit enjoy the cooler weather and the real STUDS come up on the flats to feed pretty much right through March. December is a great time to fish the flats as the crowds are light and the fish are everywhere. Capt. Kelso was out a day or so ago and ran into numerous schools of tailing fish before this last front.

For an added bonus on the flats the big barracudas will make their presence known in the shallows. Sitting by sandy spots ready to pounce on a lure casted to them the right way. These guys, in my opinion are the under sung heroes of the flats.

The Backcountry here at Dream Catchers we have started the Dream Catcher Drift already with HUGE rewards for our anglers that love to cast and cast and cast some more. Trout up to 26 inches here in Key West..?? Yup.. Big boys, our trout fishery is growing and they are not getting any smarter. On the drift our anglers are also finding pompano, lady fish up to 3 lbs and lots of hard fighting jacks. The shark fishing guys will love a shot at light tackle tangling with a black tip shark.

Really cool part of backcountry fishing is the protection of the interior islands making the calm waters even if its blowing 30.. Of course at that point its up to our anglers weather they want to go or not. We generally always leave it up to them.
