Key West Christmas Week Extended Forecast

Sailfish Ultra Grand Slam with Capt. Craig Jiovani. Nice Sailfish.

December 17th 2013 — The weather man is rarely right but we still gotta pay attention to some of what he says.. Here is a quick report for the extended forecast and what I expect the fishing will be like on Christmas week after looking at the charts.

From the looks of things the weather will be pretty steady. A windy next week is in store. Nicer days will have winds down around 12 mph and the sportier days will be up around 25 mph. Don’t look for the flats calm and perfect, its just not in the cards next week with the jet doing what it is. Our unseasonably warm December is going to pre vale through the period.

Backcountry Fishing

We should be same – o same -o Trout, redfish, sharks, barracudas on the warmer days and permit on  the flats. Water temps look like they will stay in the 70’s. There may be some South Easterly patterns bringing moist air into our forecast just before Christmas day to bring up the tarpon, but that may be short lived as the computer models show us getting a front on Wednesday or Thursday. None the less it won’t be a bad one and your backcountry and flats fishing will be the better choice for those wanting to stay out of the heavy seas of offshore fishing.

Reef Fishing

Expect the yellowtail snapper and mutton snapper bite to get better. as the cooler temps start to bring down the water temps the snappers will heat up. Also keep in mind the full moon will wain making our nights darker and the fish hunger during the day. A half day fishing charter is all you will need to fill the box with a nice limit of Yellowtails, grouper and mutton snapper. Keep in mind Grouper season closes January 1 for the Atlantic.

Deep Sea Fishing

The last week has been great, for JUNE>.. yes the South winds really brought up the dolphin fishing bite and I expect with the Easterlies from now till Christmas day will provide a good bit of action on the troll for dolphin, wahoo, blacken tuna and sailfish. The sail fishing will improve on the more Northerly winds. IN the sportier conditions I recommend a deep sea or sport fishing boat to take you to the reef and be more comfortable.

Many Fishing guides here in Key West still have some openings in their schedule for fishing. Give us a call and we will help you find the right Christmas adventure for you/.. We are happy to help.
