Speckled Sea Trout

Key West is getting some nice sized trout lately and the guys at Dream Catcher Charters on on them.

January 13 2015 – The weather, the fishing, the people the whole thing has been great in the last week for backcountry fishing here out of Key West. We have been super busy on the flats and backcountry with loads of opportunity.

The Backcountry Fishing
4 and 6 hour fishing charters have been the staple lately for folks to get out and rip some lips at a smorgasbord of fish. The mackerel, trout, jacks, snappers, cobia, sharks and barracudas have all been showing up to entertain our anglers. Using mostly spin fishing gear in the 12 – 20b test range the action has been pretty awesome. Top water plugs are producing some really fun blasting strikes from the mid level dwellers like jacks, lady fish and the occasional blue fish. Trout have shown a huge interest in the top water action as well with the surprise super strike from the bottom as they come up and house the plugs. This is a great reward for our anglers to put in the time. Running deeper baits has been the most productive for most of the species. Carrying retrieve speeds and changing up the colors we have been able to really turn on the bite to keep all skill levels having fun and bent rods.

Here at Dream Catcher Charters our backcountry fishing is done on our 24 ft bay boats smooth rides, stable fishing platforms and able to carry up to 4 persons out to the backcountry.

Flats Fishing

January is a great time of the year to go flats fishing. I really enjoy it for the fact its not to hot and there are some serious sport fishing opportunities available for those that are willing to put in the time for the trophy. We have been seeing an unusually large number of permit and they are good sized on the flats here. Along with great permit fishing this time of the year we also have some very large barracudas on the flats as well. Sunning themselves keeping warm they are ready to eat. Following the sting rays keep an eye out for jacks. They use the sting rays as portable chum bags cruising the flats and strike like a freight train. If your really lucky, you might even find a nice cobia tailing the rays. Its all good out of Key West in January. With the 10-15 mph winds we have typically this time of the year its easier to pole right up on one of these big fish and get a shot. The weather has been pretty consistent lately for winter patterns so the fish on the flats get a little more comfortable through the regular days.

Our flats fishing trips can be done on one of our bay boats this time of the year or we can use one of our traditional poling flats fishing skiffs. Either way we can get you right up on these fish up close and personal to get you the shot you are looking for. Remember we typically don’t recommend any more than 2 anglers on a “Flats Fishing Specific” charter. You can use light tackle spin fishing gear or a fly rod, your choice we offer them both. People typically catch more fish using a spinning rod.

Flats fishing and backcountry fishing are both done in the same areas. You can do one or both in the same trip We talk about flats fishing when we are talking waters of less than 2 ft. Deeper than that, its backcountry fishing.
