The Gulf Stream Is Close Deep Sea Fishing Picks Up

Wahoo deep sea fishing Deep Sea fishing on board the INXS a good wahoo for dinner.

June 23 2023 – The Gulf Stream is close and our deep sea fishing off Key West is picking up. The weather is amazing with light winds and super hot days.

Deep Sea Fishing Report

Heading offshore this time of year is typically a long run to get into the mahi mahi. Not this week. The Gulf Stream is bringing us loads of treats with mahi mahi and the occasional wahoo right into 350 – 400 ft of water. On board the INXS this week we had some great trips with catches of plenty of Mahi and some nice wahoo.

Working mostly in 400 ft of water the fish have been found under birds. We tried to move a little deeper only to find our mahi getting smaller than what they were right outside the color change where some nice 25- 30″ fish were being caught pretty regularly. There were plenty of birds working the bait that the mahi were chasing up letting us know right where they were. 60% of the time the mahi would come a rushing through the spread to eat. It was a really good time and welcome change from the weeks before where the bite was depressing no matter how far offshore we went.

Most of our fish this week were hooked using naked ballyhoo on our short positions. Grass was small and very un-organized so if we kept those baits shagged when the birds were found we got hits. Some fish were also hitting our deep troll off of our Cannon down riggers. My mate Garrette always wants to keep some baits down deep for a shot at a wahoo and this week that certainly paid off with several wahoo caught.

Fishing Forecast

Coming up it is anyones guess as to what the Gulf Stream will do. I will assume (hope) that it stays in close and keeps bringing us the treats from the deep to keep my clients happy. The Easterly winds are also a blessing as they keep things fresh out there and helps stack up what little weed we are seeing.

Pro Tips

Bring the meat, these fish seem to really want it plain with nothing on the side. We recommend ballyhoo old school plain and simple. Keep them clean and tidy.. For the wahoo they have been hitting our deep troll and for some reason they are in love with pink witches. Do Not run to far, keep it short and look for the birds the little ones and the medium size ones.. Frigates are also helpful… Keep looking.. if they are diving there are fish.. The Frigates might be on a floater (junk in the water).

Deep Sea Fishing Charters

Summer is a slower time of the year for our deep sea fishing fleet as things start to heat up. Most folks really like to be on boats that have Air conditioning to cool off from the heat. There are only a few deep sea fishing boats that offer that amenity and they get sold out quick. Call Gennifer, she not only does the bookings for my boat the “INXS” a 47ft Viking she also does the bookings for several other deep sea fishing charters. Gennifer has a deep sea fishing charter for most budgets and she also handles split or shared charters.
