Tarpon In July

July 16th 2023 – Tarpon fishing in July. The heat is on! For sure here in Key West. Hottest summer we have seen in a long time, if ever. The water is crystal clear but rather warm with temperatures in the backcountry islands and on the flats reaching the low 90s in some places that the flow is cut off at low tide even hotter.

Tarpon Fishing

Here in Key West we are having one of the better tarpon fishing seasons we have had in a few years. I will not say it was “back to normal” however it was pretty good. As we slide into July the tarpon fishing usually slows down a good bit and this year is no different. It has slowed but not stoped. We are still catching tarpon in all size ranges here from 20 – 100 lbs. I think if an angler gets underway early to beat the heat and the related boat traffic they should expect a good shot at a tarpon on a charter with a fishing guide that knows where the tarpon go in July.

tarpon July
The smaller tarpon really put on a show for my anglers when they are hooked.

On my fishing charters I have had anglers fishing both fly fishing gear and spin fishing gear with good success. Yesterday my anglers were fishing spin gear and managed to jump a fish with artificial and then hang a nice 90lb fish on live bait. I will say that after about 10:00 am its hot and time to do something else. Yesterday we went to the flats and sight casted a good number of bonefish.

So, Yes… We have tarpon here in July. I expect if things are getting back to normal that we will have decent if not good tarpon fishing right on into September for the bigger guys and the juveniles will be good through October into November.
