Winter is always a fun time to go fishing here in Key West and this week has been no exception to that rule. Great weather cooler temps and massive amounts of bait are the reasons for the great fishing all the same for the great forecast..

The 5 day weather forecast..

The Christmas week now till the 30th of December weather looks decent right up till Sunday the 30th Morning where we have the tail of a front pushing through and bringing our winds up to 20 – 25 kts, so Sunday and Monday might be a bit sporty for offshore fishing. The winds will be tapering off on Wednesday the 02 of January. Not much in the way of cold just wind. Till then this week Thursday Friday and Saturday look great.

Inshore Backcountry and Flats Fishing

The boys here at Dream Catcher Charters have been showing people a fun filled time on the water catching all sorts of species keeping the rods bent and the smiles endless. Trout, Redfish, sharks, barracudas, pompano, blue fish and large jacks are the fun to be had on our super light Daiwa outfits you can find on any one of our amazing bay boats. Winter fish seem to be twice as mean, fight harder and provide more volume than any other time of the year. Some of our 4 and 6 hour trips are catching up to 60 fish over 14 inches showing anglers of all ages and skill level a blast on the water fishing. On the flats the permit are still up and grazing looking for crabs.. Also.. on the flats we have been seeing some decent sized cobia following the rays making for an incredible shot for anglers to have some fun..Even during the blow this weekend the backcountry fishing will be great..

We still have some availability to get anglers out there this week for New years and beyond if you are coming to Key West or if you are already here give us a call and see what is available.

Offshore Deep Sea Wreck and Reef

Kingfish

Christmas Kingfish caught with Capt. Steven Lamp Dream Catcher Charters

The reef is on fire… baitfish everywhere and many toothy critters eating them. Some blackfin tunas reported with a scattered report of dolphin and a sail off the reefs. We have been getting into nice sized yellowtail snapper, black groupers and HUGE cero mackerels along with a constant bite of bonito and kingfish. Christmas day we boated a nice 30# kingfish for a young lady angler that had always wanted to catch one..There is a ton of bait around easy to net and use for fishing. The live bait just adds to the mess of fish to be caught.

We have some availability in our Deep Sea and wreck and reef fishing trips for 4,6 and 8 hours.

Deep Sea Fishing Heats Up As Temps Cool In Key West

Deep Sea fishing will be epic this week with the falling temps here in Key West.

Our Very Own Island Genn With A Nice Dolphin

I was talking with a couple of the “real” deep sea charter boat captains here in Key West about what they thought the last cold front would do for them in the way of fishing. Both of them said it should be awesome.

With he hard Northwesterly we had over the weekend and the upcoming East and South Easterly winds there will be a nice shift in patterns making the fish light up and close to shore. Those long runs wont be needed to get into Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish, Wahoo, Sailfish and as the South Easterlies kick up a big Winter time Dolphin (mahi Mahi). This, all just 7 miles from the dock.

The weather outlook this week looks like a perfect Christmas to go fishing..

Redfish In Key West

An angler fishing with Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters poses with a Key West Redfish.

Lets go redfish fishing in Florida… Ok, lets head to Key West. Huh? what?

Yep. We have always had a few redfish here and there in Key West especially in the winter time as the waters get cooler but lately due to our conservation efforts we have noticed a huge increase in this very fun fishes population.

We have always released redfish as we know that its important to maintain a healthy fishery of amazing numbers of fish to allow them to mature and spawn. In the past we have found redfish then some other less resource concerned fishing guide sees us in the spot then goes in and kills them all to make sure no one has a chance to play.

We are now finding fish now in the uncanniest places again. Places that a red fishing guy would not think to look. And we are still practicing a stringent catch and release policy. See, we have 8 boats, 6 of them are backcountry boats that fish for all the species of the backcountry. We run A lot. so, its our job to ensure that we take the high road on catch and release to ensure we don’t destroy the fishery that has made Key West great. We are not saying taking fish legally is wrong, its just that the redfish fishery is so new to Key West that we want it to grow to crazy numbers.

Thanks to our fishing guides such as Capt. Kyle Kelso here at Dream Catcher Charters and their creativity to look around for new and expanded fisheries we have been able to stay on top here in Key West fishing.

Muttons For All In Key West

Key West Fishing For Mutton Snappers. Delightfully Delicious.

Mutton snapper are without a doubt one of the best eating fishes in the sea. Right up there next to the True American Red snapper for me and both are under the Hog Fish as my all time favorite.

Mutton snapper are a main staple of fishing for anglers here in Key West especially when they spawn in the months of April and May. Mostly a by catch for many anglers and fishing guides the rest of the year when fishing for grouper and yellowtail snapper on the reef line. Huge muttons live in the deep waters of 160 – 220 feet and require a bit of a run to get to them and quite a work out to power them up to the boat from that depth.

Here at Dream Catcher Charters We have mastered the year round mutton snapper fishing in less than 70 ft of water with consistent catches of 8-14 lb fish. Easy fishing with high reward and fun fights..

Yesterday we got out for a little while after messing with the permit and the cobia on the shallow wrecks and made use of an hour of bottom fishing time to catch this nice group of filets. Using smaller artificial baits and being very patient pays off when mutton snapper fishing.

The bite for mutton snapper should be real good right through February as the larger fish come in shallow to enjoy the huge amount of bait in the cooler waters. A nice side catch are the red and black groupers we obtain when fishing for these guys.

Lots of fun and plenty of action to be had out there. Give us a call and see what we have available. Take a look at our Key West wreck and reef fishing page to learn more about this sort of trip.
