Fishing Report

June 13 2013 – Give us good weather and the fishing will Rock!

Permit fishing

Fishing The Flats of Key West this angler has a great day fishing with Capt. Kyle Walsh of Dream Catcher Charters.

After the tropical system that turned into Andrea passed through here and rinsed off the island chain we have had nothing but epic fishing conditions and incredible fishing reports to follow.

Inshore the tarpon fishing is still full on. The migration has not slowed a bit and there are thousands of fish circling Key West and the Marquesas Keys. On the flats the permit have been making a great showing. I was fishing the flats yesterday on what I would consider a weak incoming tide and was still able to put my fly fishing angler on some great shots of tailing fish. Bonefishing has also been pretty good but not stellar just yet. Some fish in the 4-6 lb range have been caught. Its not a stretch to try and go for the big three Key West Grand Slam. Elsewhere in the shallows we have some excellent table fare in our snapper population that has invaded the Key West backcountry waters. Mangrove snappers are super tasty and hard fighters on light tackle. Don’t forget our toothy guys for some extra fun with barracudas and sharks.

Offshore the dolphin fishing has been a 50 – 50 sport mixed with some blue and white marling on the troll. Several blue marlin and some whites have been hooked in the last few days on our offshore boats in this super calm waters conditions. Dolphin up to 40 lbs have been eating and entertaining anglers off Key West.

The reef is loaded with snappers and remember it is grouper season. Get to some good bottom with any of our light tackle fishing guides and you will be rewarded with a STELLAR dinner of Yellowtails, Muttons and Red Grouper. There are some black grouper around as well to put some more color in the box.

Deep Sea Fishing Weekend Wrap Up

June 1 2013- Deep sea fishing for dolphin, tuna and wahoo was decent this weekend. Some nice fish were caught. Mostly Dolphin with a few exceptions.

Capt. Rob Harris was running the Intense for Dream Catcher Charters several days this weekend with some nice slammer dolphin coming to the dock. Fish up to 20 lbs for some fun anglers and plenty of them. Along the way Capt. Rob also stopped to get up some Snowey grouper to add to the box and a 25 lb fish made it to the surface using some high tech electric reels made exclusively for bottom fishing in 500 ft of water. A highlight the last few days was the white marling that Capt. Robs anglers jumped. He was about 100lbs and full of fire and fury as he ate the flat line and turned tail to run. After a brief fight the fish spit the hook and went on about his day.

Reports elsewhere in the Key West deep sea fishing fleet are similar, dolphin to 20 lbs and the occasional marlin. What a great time to be deep sea fishing here in Key West.

Flats Fishing Report

June 1 2013 – Perfect weather and decent tides rewards an angler with 2 nice days of weather, some great shots and 4 nice fish, flats fishing with Capt. Steven Lamp of Dream Catcher Charters.

Starting off early is great for tarpon fishing here but for a quick tide shot at some sight fishing for permit and bonefish I decided that an 8 am depart was great for me to pick up a last of the out going and first of the incoming tide in an area where my logs told me there would be some opportunities lurking. Fishing with a regular customer of ours but our first time fishing together. We set off in my Lake and Bay flats boat. Nathan had landed many tarpon and some other species with our guides here at Dream Catchers and now his dream was to get shots at and catch a nice permit or bonefish that was sight fished on the flats. He was up for the task…

bonefish

Nathan Catches a nice Key West Bonefish.

First day was off to a decent start, the flat felt fishy as I worked the shallows of an edge falling out with the tide. Shrimp in Key West have been scarce so it was an artificial sort of morning using a special tied buck tail jig that I am fond of in grassy areas for bonefish. Working the skinny water many smaller sharks were looking for some fun as well. Backs out of the water they are easy to note the difference from that of a bonefish. The bones were cooperative coming through in schools of 6 – 10 in the smaller sizes. Shots were made and things just did not come together. I spotted some fish tailing right up on the shallowest part of the flat. The cast made, Nathan was hooked up large on a nice bonefish. Weighing in at 6.5 lbs. A very respectable Key West bonefish.

Moving on down the flat we poled a good ways. Interestingly enough there were an amazing amount of tarpon in the channel just to our backs, but Nathan was on task for his tailing permit. The tarpon were not going to be harassed today. A few more shots at bonefish were made but no connection as we got to where I knew some permit would be poking about.

Permit

Capt. Steven and Nathan pose with Nathan’s permit.

Now using the bonefish rod as a secondary to the permit rod we made ready with one of the few crabs to be found in Key West for permit fishing. Not long at all and we had our first shot of the day. three nice fish working a shallow spot of the flat just ahead and what luck, working our way. Nice.. A cast was made and the largest of the three fish ate and Nathan landed his first, largest and sight fished permit. 23 lbs. Nice first fish. It was a real fighter too making many runs across the flats. And that was a wrap on our first day of flats fishing..

Day 2.

The bonefish Gods were making things a little tougher. with some high clouds for tough viability. we go into the flats a little early in the tide but that did not mean the fish were not there. After being mugged a few times Nathan landed a nice jig shot right into the middle of some bonefish traversing their way from shallow to deep for his second sight casted fish. This fish ate well and fast. Coming into the scales at 4.5 lbs. Now we were off to compound on some permit..

permit fish and angler

Nathans 2 permit day 2

It was a slow mid day on the hunt for permit. We saw a few fish but the water was moving slowly and the fish were super wary blowing out early before we got in range. as the day progressed I felt a geography change was needed to get our shots. so I jumped and made a 15 minute run. It paid off.. Right off the bat we had a shot at 12:00 but the crab landed at 11 then a 1:00 again 11. Now Nathan was angry, silence fell between he and I as he realized any chance of bettering yesterday was fading. Then I spotted a nice fish tailing on the flat in a white spot. These fish can be super spooky on the white.. I took the time to explain exactly where he was to Nathan, he said nothing. Do you hear me? he nodded.. Ready? nodded, Cast!! He did and the shot was Perfect.. 10 minutes later we landed a nice 13lb permit to add to his list.

Nice day fun times..

Mutton Snapper Spawn

May 28 2013 The mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) spawn of Key West is a yearly event that is attracting more and more attention by local anglers, commercial fishermen, visiting anglers on charter and the feds. Lets take a look at it.

Mutton snapper and grouper

Capt. Steven (middle) with some friends with a nice mixed bag of mutton snapper and grouper

Mutton snapper for me are without a doubt one of the best eating snappers out there and in my top three list of favorite fish to eat, right up there with true American red snapper and yellowtail snapper. Unlike yellowtail but similar to red snapper the mutton is one of the larger snappers. Fish up to 26lbs have been harvested here in Key West pretty regular and Key West also holds the world record for these tasty fish of 30.4 lbs that was caught out near the Dry Tortugas. Personally I really enjoy catching the mutton snappers both for their really good fight and the look of reward on my fishing clients faces when they boat a really nice one. Plus These fish really look great in the box..

Year round mutton snappers of decent size are relatively easy to harvest for a guy with a few gps numbers and some range. The Farther you run West its been my experience the fish get easier, larger and subsequently dumber. Not difficult for me and my anglers on any given day to put 4-8 nice size mutton snapper in the boat along with some black grouper, red grouper and mangrove snappers to make for a good mix. I fish generally in 55 – 85 ft of water so its pretty easy on my anglers. Whats really fun is the fish that I fish for eat jigs pretty well so I don’t usually have to anchor, making it all that much easier. Throughout my days out there I rarely if ever see or come across another boat, making the day in my opinion all the much better. I guess my point here is catching mutton snapper throughout the whole year is really not all that hard.

Every year about this time during the May and June (May being best) full moon the mutton snapper spawn off our local reef here just South West of Key West and in a few other locations. Its an amazing event. On these selected humps just on the reef before the deep reef hundreds of thousands of fish come together year after year to the same spot. The females are loaded with roe (eggs) and the males are ready to fertilize this congregation is natures way of insuring the future of the species. While this event happens the muttons are not very weary of capture and a usually selective eater turns into a drunken sailor willing to bite at anything. Therefore making them easy prey to anglers.

In this area there are many predators attracted by the copious amounts of egg and sperm in the water as well as the struggle of caught fish. It is often said that the protection of the sharks from harvesting has increased the numbers of them on the reef in the last few years with noticeable numbers of fish being intercepted by sharks more frequently when caught adding to the numbers of mutton snappers taken during this event.

Where the mutton snappers gather is not a secret spot by any means but a spot that is easy for anyone to reach in just about any boat with enough anchor line to stay put in roughly 60 – 130 ft of water on several locations up and down the reef line of the Florida Keys and in the Bahamas. With some diligence a little voodoo, the right bait and plenty of cooler space a group of four anglers can limit out a boat with 10 mutton snappers for each angler in less than two hours. In fact, many boats are capable of doing this two to three times in a single night making for quite a haul. It has gotten quite popular.

Lets do some math – these fish run in size as I mentioned earlier from 12- 20 lbs. Thats a large quantity of meat and good eating meat as well. 40 Fish X 12 lb average = 480 lbs of uncleaned fish yielding down to roughly 192 lbs of filets. Thats a lot of meat for four anglers, it takes a ton of freezer space to keep that much fish properly frozen and hopefully does not go to waste.

Mutton Snapper plug

Mutton Snapper Caught in 10 ft of water on casting plug.

Lets do some more math – Studies show a 20 inch female stands to bear  1.4 million eggs in a single spawn. These eggs will hatch into larva in less than 20 hours. Studies show that there are roughly 2 males to every female caught. So for our bag limit we have about 12 Females on our subject boat of four anglers and a legal limit of 40 mutton snappers. Thats about  5.6 million eggs. So, if we say that 1/2 of 1% of the eggs laid survive to adult fish we are talking 28,000 fish added to the over all population of fish for next year.. Just from one boat.. 28,000 mutton snapper. Thats a lot of snappers..

The argument for regulation is multi sided and heated at times. Here are some schools of thought.

I feel as though the legal limit is the legal limit and there is no reason why an angler should not be allowed to exercise his right to bag as many fish as the law allows no matter how easy it is or the impact it may or may not have on the species. Thats why we have laws in place. As much as I would love to see pressure come off of the spawn of these fish I hate regulation. More regulation means more management that frankly is not being overseen by an already under budgeted and under resourced LEO department of FWC. Everyone knows if they have been fishing long enough, when the feds take away, they never give it back even after we have the species crawling out of our ears. Ultimately self regulation would be the ultimate we all know thats not going to happen.

As the years go on we have seen the mutton snapper spawn attract more and more anglers to these sights to “get their share”. 10 years ago I really don’t think it was as big an issue as it is today and will be bigger next year and so on.

Mutton Snapper are on the table for regulation…

Mutton Snapper

Key West Reef Holds A Bounty Of Mutton Snapper

What will they do?  I promise you one thing, whatever they do, no one is going to like it if it results in fewer fish being allowed to harvest. Maybe A lowered limit to 2 or 3 per person would be good for the mutton snappers during the spawn easing the pressure off the numbers of spawning fish. However, if that bag limit is kept for the rest of the year it will really hurt the charter fleet not only the nights of the spawn but for the rest of the year. The anglers who know they can only have 2 or 3 of these fish (catch them or not) will not book charters for only that possibility as well as the lowered limits on grouper. For the money spent the clients want more harvest ability and muttons are a big part of that draw. I am not sure I see them (the law makers) making a concession for just those days of the spawn. But if they did.. I think 3 per angler is a better number than 2 and the rest of the year a 10 fish aggregate limit like before. (me thinks wishful thinking)

So, Regulation seems to be the road we are on with the mutton snappers here in the Florida Keys. How much, who knows. More and more folks are coming here to get in on the harvest and its becoming a big deal putting this whole thing on the radar for the feds to come in and regulate it.

Does it make sense to ease the pressure off the spawn? Sure it does, if the rough math that i did for this article is even close, it means more fish in the population making more opportunities for anglers inshore and offshore to catch these fish outside of the spawn time. But at what cost?

Fishing Report For Key West

May 27th 2013 — Soggy conditions will take over the Blue skies for a few days here in Key West bringing a wet blanket over the killer fishing we have been experiencing for the last several weeks.

Wow, as soon as you think, Hey…. its over.. 5 -10 and we win.. Whammo Mother nature re assures us she is the HBIC. The forecast this week is one of the worst I have seen in May in a very long time. A strong low pressure compliments of our friends in the Yucatan is headed our way with a large but moderate circulation.. My opinion this is the line in the sand that separates the winter northern patterns from the fronts that hit us from the South. The tropical weather pattern has just begun  TODAY… As i sit here in Sugarloaf Key and its Pouring rain I am assured that weather is a coming..

Hows the backcountry Fishing? Its tough. reports from the backcountry today were off from that just 24 hours ago. The tarpon bite was hard this afternoon as the winds were approaching 20 – 25 mph out of the East South East. Jacks, snappers, and sharks were reported by the men here at Dream Catcher Charter for their afternoon efforts, Good thing.. thats what they were targeting for some young anglers. Sight fishing was a challenge in the winds but some permit were seen up on the tops of the flats.

Offshore I have nothing for you except over the weekend the Florida Keys Dolphin Championship was won by a guy out of Big Pine Key with a 42 lb fish.. Nice work. I have no reports from today out of Key West except that the offshore deep sea guys are still planing on getting out there tomorrow in the wind..

The Fishing Forecast.. With the weather we are watching it looks as though the week to come after Memorial Day will be hit or miss. They are calling for winds up to 25 and rain chances most days this week into the 60 percent range.. Yuck.. But the show must go on..

Bad Weather Forecast Fishing Tips —- If the weather looks favorable for a short while DO NOT Hesitate to call a fishing guide and set up a last minute ride to go get your fishing thing on.. Tarpon trips are especially good for this as we can be in the fish in a mater of minutes and we would LOVE to fill the gaps of our schedules of the guys who Bailed on us for the bad weather..
