It’s Tarpon Time!

April 15th 2013 – Tarpon fishing report and forecast from Dream Catcher Charters.

Tarpon Last Week

We went through a lull last week over the new moon. We started taking it personally as the fish were just not being cooperative.. NOW>. don’t discount a new moon for tarpon fishing, its not always like that.. But toward the later part of the week things picked back up to pace and we were back in the fish with true style. Our half days in the afternoon trips were producing epic numbers on the out going tides with 9 and 10 fish hooked on these trips.
The last day or so things have been very good for both morning and afternoon bites..

Water temps in the low 80′s

Currently as of today.

The tarpon are all over the place and not leaving till after July. I expect them to hit the flats soon and in some areas we are finding them laid up in the shallows already and eating very well on fly, crab or a lightly presented artificial. The DOA shrimp is a great choice for spin fishing and the different colored Toad patterns are great for fly.. I like the brown ones..

Lets get out there.. Looking for a tarpon fishing guide? Call us. We do this.. Some morning and many afternoon slots are available. We use nothing but the best tackle from Daiwa and Owner..

Call us… For up to the minute..

Redfish In Key West

An angler fishing with Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters poses with a Key West Redfish.

Lets go redfish fishing in Florida… Ok, lets head to Key West. Huh? what?

Yep. We have always had a few redfish here and there in Key West especially in the winter time as the waters get cooler but lately due to our conservation efforts we have noticed a huge increase in this very fun fishes population.

We have always released redfish as we know that its important to maintain a healthy fishery of amazing numbers of fish to allow them to mature and spawn. In the past we have found redfish then some other less resource concerned fishing guide sees us in the spot then goes in and kills them all to make sure no one has a chance to play.

We are now finding fish now in the uncanniest places again. Places that a red fishing guy would not think to look. And we are still practicing a stringent catch and release policy. See, we have 8 boats, 6 of them are backcountry boats that fish for all the species of the backcountry. We run A lot. so, its our job to ensure that we take the high road on catch and release to ensure we don’t destroy the fishery that has made Key West great. We are not saying taking fish legally is wrong, its just that the redfish fishery is so new to Key West that we want it to grow to crazy numbers.

Thanks to our fishing guides such as Capt. Kyle Kelso here at Dream Catcher Charters and their creativity to look around for new and expanded fisheries we have been able to stay on top here in Key West fishing.

Windy Conditions Prevail Backcountry Fishing is Hot!

An angler fishing with Capt. Kyle Kelso of Dream Catcher Charters poses with a Key West Redfish.

Windy conditions have prevailed since the Power Boat Race week and expected to continue through next week with a steady 15 – 25 mph out of the NE and East.

Backcountry fishing has been pretty darn good none the less. Here at Dream Catcher Charters we have been running a steady flow of trips with an unseasonably busy November coming off of a particularly great October. Thanks to all of our repeat clientele and much new business to fill our boats with some incredible offseason fishing opportunities.

Trout have been the word. Ever since Dream Catchers broke the news that trout were biting off Key West back in September the bite is still on. The fish move slightly from place to place but be certain that our professional fishing guides are on their tails. Catches lately of 24 inches have hit the board and what a fish that is for Key West or anywhere for that matter. The maturity of our trout fishery here has sure shown itself.

Redfish have been spotty but as the water cools (currently 70 + – 4 depending on time of day and tide) the redfish are finding their way into the winter time haunts and becoing more consistent for our dedicated anglers. Along the way you will also run into the goliath groupers and some large snappers with the occasional smaller snook that eats your offering.

Pompano showed up a few weeks ago. Leave it to our captains to root out these tasty Florida seafood fish. Pompano put up a great fight and offer our anglers one more trophy species to add to the list..

Flats Fishing

Permit fishing has been super strong the last couple weeks. We have been able to offer our clients that want to put in the time a great number of shots at these sought after fish. Bonefishing was slow this year to start with and now seems to have come to a close with the sub 70 degree temps.. Not to say they cannot be found on the ocean facing flats where temps are a little warmer but its not consistent enough for us to consider a “bonefishing” trip,. Barracudas and mutton snappers are the incredible by catch of the flats here in Key West this time of the year. Ya never know where they might be. Mutton snappers up to 7 lbs have been landed by our team here at Dream Catchers.

All in all with the wind we are still showing folks an amazing day on the waters here in Key West on board our bay boats.

Feel free to drop us a line and talk to us about fishing in Key West. We are happy to point you in the right direction.

Key West Fishing Report Inshore

Fishing here at Dream Catcher Charters has been steady and full of fun days on the water as long as the weather held out. We are coming out of a drippy week that had some sunny days mixed in with some stellar flats fishing conditions throughout the period.

Our captains here at Dream Catchers have been getting into some bonefish and permit this last week which is typical for the season. Late September and early October are my favorite times to fish for bonefish and permit here on our Key West flats so no surprise.. Anglers can book a 4 or 6 hour trip and know they have a decent chance at either of those two amazing light tackle trophies.

But Here is whats interesting….

Angler fishing with Capt. Kyle of Dream Catcher Charters shows off a STUD of a lady fish… 5 lbs.. thats a company record.

Generally our winter cast of characters like trout, redfish, pompano, lady fish and large mangrove snappers don’t show up till November and December offering us an amazing amount of casting fun for our anglers with lots of fantastic catching with high volume trips loaded with great catches.. Well Guess what. Those fun fish we love to catch in the winter are here now ready to fight.. Capt Kyle Kelso and his angler a few days ago caught a nice 5lb lady fish on 10lb test. He said the fish never jumped and put up a tarpon’ish fight all the way to the boat.. Many fish in the 3-4 lb range have been caught since offering our clients loads of backcountry fishing fun.

We are delighted to see the fishery coming full circle for the year with amazing opportunities for our anglers.

Check out our web site at www.dreamcatchercharters.com and see what we can do to show you an incredible day on the water fishing here in Key West, Florida.

Thanks for stopping by and Tight Lines.

Permit

Key West Permit Fishing

The wind still blows. Looks like it will keep on through Tuesday of next week in the 20′s but thats not an issue.. This time the winds bring with them a Northerly direction and some cooler air which will equate to cooler water temps changing the game for every stage of fishing here in Key West.

Backcountry and flats.

Don’t expect to have Santa bring you any December bonefish up on the flats in any
solid numbers this year. The hunt will be for permit. Permit enjoy the cooler weather and the real STUDS come up on the flats to feed pretty much right through March. December is a great time to fish the flats as the crowds are light and the fish are everywhere. [Read more...]
